Did you always want to be in the entertainment industry?
I didn’t always aspire to be in the entertainment industry, but it played a significant role in my life from a young age. My mom worked at Cox Media, and my dad was a DJ, which meant I was often surrounded by radio station equipment and his DJ gear at home. I started making beats and DJing shortly after elementary school, and that’s when my passion really began to grow. I first got into it in sixth grade, doing small gigs with my dad and learning to make beats in my free time. By high school, I had become quite familiar with Serato and Fruity Loops, which helped further ignite my love for music.
My passion for DJing and music developed early on, especially as I enjoyed curating playlists for family cookouts and events. It wasn't until I had my first successful gig in high school that I realized I wanted to pursue it seriously. That experience solidified my love for the craft and motivated me to take my DJing to the next level.
What is your thought process when working on a new DJ Set?
My thought process when working on a new DJ set really depends on the demographic I'm playing for. For an older crowd, I focus on songs that were popular during their high school or college years. When I'm catering to a younger audience, I make sure to include the latest hits from the top 40. It’s relatively easy to DJ for my own age group since I’m part of that demographic; I have a good sense of what they want to hear.
What inspires you to DJ?
What inspires me to DJ is seeing people put their phones down and actually dance. A skilled DJ can transform an average club into an unforgettable experience. I pride myself on my adaptability; if I need to switch out a setlist, I can do so with a simple download to keep the energy alive. My flexible DJ style allows me to play the right music for any room, ensuring that the vibe always matches the moment.
What does music mean to you?
Music has always been an escape for me. Since I was a kid, it’s been more than just a song; it’s a profound release that allows me to express who I am as a person. It has the power to connect me to my emotions and experiences, making it an essential part of my life.
Do you feel that artists really understand the business aspect of the music industry?
Many artists often underestimate the business side of the music industry, but it's essential for achieving sustainable success. This involves aspects like marketing, branding, and understanding contracts. How important do you feel is having the right team?
Having the right team is crucial because they can help you gain access to important opportunities and allow you to focus on your talent. When you have individuals dedicated to essential tasks like booking shows or handling paperwork that may be outside your expertise, it maximizes your time efficiency and ensures that you can concentrate on what you do best - creating and performing.
What is your long-term goal in life?
My long-term goal is to provide a blueprint for others with similar skills. I learned live engineering early on and gained audio engineering and production knowledge before even entering college. I understand the process of developing skills and leveraging them effectively. If I can help someone else navigate that journey early on, it would be a rewarding experience for me.
